Hey Hey!

I hope you’re all doing well, friends!

I’m particularly excited about this week’s post because it is centered around one of my greatest passions: THEATRE! For anyone new here who may not know, theatre is not only one of my passions, it’s what I hope to pursue professionally! I’ve been dancing and performing in theatre for as long as I can remember and last year, I received my B.A. in Musical Theatre from DeSales University! *whoop whoop*

Two months before I was set to graduate, perform in my senior showcase, start work with a professional theatre company, and hit the ground running in the theatre industry, the whole world shut down. Broadway shut down, and it has been shut down until, well, now. Fortunately, things for individuals in the performing arts industry are FINALLY starting to look up and some theatre is set to start happening slowly but surely all over the country.

You might be thinking “wow. a year is a long time to go without work in your field” or “wow. how do you even keep that passion alive?” All good questions, my friend. And the truthful answer? It’s been hard as hell. Beyond hard, really. I don’t even think there is a word in the dictionary yet to describe what artists have been through in the last year+. But armed with resilience and many, MANY years’ worth of armor built up to fight rejection, we persevered, and we continue to do so every. damn. day.

While it’s been hard and I’ve had many days where I contemplate changing career paths completely and the first note of my favorite cast album brings me to tears and I have to turn it off because it’s too much to bear, on the flip side, I have tried really hard to keep my love, craft, and skills alive and thriving! Now, if you’re a creative reading this and you’re like “Angela, I haven’t done a damn thing and I DID change career paths,” then I want you to know that what you have/have not done does not make you any less of a creative. Every creative individual has processed and gone through this journey in their own way; there is no right or wrong way to do it. I applaud you for simply making it to this point.

Today, I want to share with you some ways in which I’ve kept my craft alive and some tools/people/groups I’ve connected with to help me do so! Here are some ways I’ve kept theatre alive in my life!

Dance From Home

I’ve written about my experience with Dance From Home before, and if you’ve read any of my Monthly Minute posts since November, you know that I am a BIG fan of their programming and mission. I can’t even really recall how or when exactly I stumbled across the DFH or Megan Bowen’s (the owner and CEO) Instagram pages, but I started out doing a free 14-day challenge, and the rest is history!

When Megan’s programming switched from individual classes/small class packages to a monthly membership, I wasn’t sure if myself and my wallet would be ready to make the transition, but I am SO glad I took a leap of faith!

I’ve been a member of DFH’s Ensemble Membership since the beginning of 2021 and I can’t even begin to describe what I’ve gained from this program. A little breakdown of what a week in the membership looks like: Monday/Wednesday are choreography classes (with different instructors throughout the month) and Tuesday/Thursday are Broadway Dance Cardio classes to a playlist of Broadway tunes (yes, they are themed!). In choreography classes, half the combo is taught Monday and it is finished and elaborated on Wednesday. Megan also recently added back Dance Cardio classes on Saturday mornings as part of the new Dance Cardio Club Membership (these weekend classes are also included in the Ensemble Membership package).

Whether you are a dancer and want that choreo class or you’re simply looking for the cardio, DFH has a package for everyone. To be explicit like Megan would want me to be, these programs are not designed for weight loss. Sure, weight loss may be a wonderful added benefit to joining, but that isn’t the purpose. The main purpose is to get the community reconnecting with their bodies and their love for musical theatre through these means!

AND, in case you weren’t already sold, every month DFH hosts one Masterclass Workshop with a Broadway Professional! We’ve worked with people from Kiss Me, Kate, Six, Hamilton, and April is….WICKED! You can get more info and sign up for the workshop on April 20th HERE!

The DFH programming has helped me keep up with my dancing abilities, and it has also really helped me learn to embrace my body and my movement. It’s taught me to be less of a perfectionist as a dancer, and I feel so much more connected to my body which in turn makes me feel more confident as a dancer. The cardio classes have helped me build and maintain stamina and strength so I can feel ready to go when theatre comes back in full force!

Monologue Consults with Shaun Leisher

If you’re a theatre artist, I’m sure you can relate when I say monologues are a b*tch to find. I still can’t seem to understand why it’s so hard to find really great monologues but it’s hard, nonetheless. Sometimes, you just have to turn to the professionals! If you’re anything like me and you’ve spent the pandemic searching for great material to no avail, I highly recommend calling up Shaun Leisher! Shaun is a Philadelphia-based dramaturg, producer and arts education advocate. While I haven’t actually met Shaun in person yet (lol, the pandemic life), he and I have many, many mutual friends and by the grace of God and the internet, we connected via social media!

Shaun offers quite an incredible service: after a 30-minute phone call with him, he will hand select about 3 monologues that suit your abilities and the artistic attributes you want to highlight. Boom. That easy. Shaun and I had an enriching 30-minute phone call and in a super quick turnaround time, he presented me with a handful of incredibly specific new material to add to my book that I truly NEVER would have found on my own!

TheatreWorksUSA: TWUSA.TV

TWUAS.TV is something new that I’ve recently integrated into my at-home theatre artist life and it’s too cute not to share! Not only have I continued to work on my personal craft as a theatre artist during this time, but I have also taken this time to familiarize and educate myself in other areas of the theatre industry. Enter, TWUSA! I have always loved kids and I believe that access to enriching art is extremely vital for young children and their families. TWUAS does exactly that! Through their programming they help bring engaging, exciting, and inclusive theatre to a wider audience of young people whether it be through educational programs or their home life!

One way that they’ve continued to do this during this uncertain time is through TWUSA.TV! With this online streaming platform, children and their families can bring the magic of live performance right into their homes! Educators can also utilize the platform to bring enriching theatre directly into the classroom (both in person and online) and into their lesson plan!

One reason why I love being a performer so much is because you never know whose life you may impact through your performance, and I’ve especially thought about this in my experience doing children’s theatre. I believe it is important to foster one’s love of theatre and performance if it develops from a young age, and what better way to nurture that passion than by bringing theatre straight into the homes or classrooms of children who may not have access to it otherwise?

Other Things!

After nearly a year without a voice lesson, I decided to find a new voice teacher! If you feel like, vocally, you’re ready to get back into training or like you have a new goal you’d like towards then I highly suggest getting yourself back into voice lessons! Obviously, it’s a financial commitment, but if you’re fortunate enough to find a teacher with sort of a “revolving door,” where you can choose how often you take lessons, then I absolutely think it’s worth it! I love, love, love my new teacher and I’ve experienced such growth in just a handful of lessons!


Good News!

And finally, some good news! I mentioned in the beginning of this post that my senior class’s showcase got cancelled in March of last year as the pandemic was happening- a WEEK before we were supposed to go to NYC. You can read my reflection of those prior happenings in my post “The Show Must Go On.”

The good news is, a little over a year later, most of my fellow showcase members and I were able to safely come together a few weeks ago and FILM our showcase to send to agencies digitally!!! It’s times like these I’m grateful to live in a technological world. Nine out of the twelve of us were able to gather together at our college after proper testing took place, and we spent a weekend rehearsing, reconnecting, and having the opportunity to showcase the work that has been waiting in the shadows for a year.

How I've Kept My Love of Theatre Alive

Connecting with my classmates a year later was equal parts nerve wracking and exciting. Some of them I hadn’t seen since we left college last March so abruptly, so I was a little nervous, not gonna lie! But like the true friends these people are, we were able to pick right up where we left off and we had the best time working together again. We’ve all grown so much as individuals outside of the pressure of the college theatre environment, and I think we actually all connected so much better than we ever have before.

Seeing people perform in front of me was magical. Being granted the opportunity to go back to college for 3 days and perform alongside some of the most outrageously talented people I know was magical. And being reminded of what I was put on this earth to do was also magical.

For as many times as I’ve felt like giving up on my dream of a theatre career, these 3 days reminded me that I SHOULD NOT give up any time soon. Keep working to make your dreams happen, friends. They are coming to you, even though it may not be evident in every moment of every day. Your hard working will pay off, your dreams will become your reality, and the world will be a better place because of it!

I hope all you beautiful people had a lovely Easter holiday! Spring is about to be happening in full force, I can feel it in my bones (and my sinuses)! I’m so excited to be in a new month, I can’t believe how quickly this year is flying by already. The next two month on the blog and on my Instagram are going to be really exciting! I’ve got some new partnerships coming up and lots to write about and recount, so I hope you’re ready! Let’s talk about some blog business and National Days in April!

New month’s always means one thing for me as a blogger: blog planning. At the end of each month, I gear up and start coming up with content for BTF and my Instagram for the upcoming month. Some people are shocked when I tell them that I try to plan my blog posts out a month in advance, but that’s just how I have to roll for me! I’m sure fellow content creators can relate, but if I don’t have ideas down and planned out in advance, I won’t produce at all. Coming up with ideas for blog posts and Insta posts/stories is a lot harder than I think people understand!

What’s one way I try to come up with monthly content? Looking up National Days for the upcoming month! Some months are easier than others, because they have lots of well-known holidays throughout their 30-31 days, but every month has some lesser known “National Days” in there too! You know, like the 40 different “National Daughter Days” or “National Sibling Days” you see all over Facebook, but much more fun and interesting!

Hi my friends!

Another month in the books! I know for many, March 2021 brought up a lot of unresolved emotions and feelings about being in the pandemic for a year, but I hope you feel proud to say that you’ve made it this far, you made it through, and you are gracefully moving forward!

As usual, I’m back with my Monthly Minute- March Monthly Review! I’m so excited to share my monthly goals with you and some of my favorite’s in this monthly review!

I guess it’s the 31 days, but this month has really felt like it’s gone on for a lifetime! SO much has happened this month so let’s dive right in to my monthly review!

March was a packed month for me! In addition to work, I was actually able to get some time to be a real person in her 20’s this month, and that time was MUCH needed. I got to sing at a dear friend’s wedding this month with my best friend, Kailey! The wedding was held at our university, so it was really beautiful to get to go back there and be part of something so intimate and special. Since we were singing, we decided to make a weekend out of it! I spent the weekend at Kailey’s and we were later joined by one of my other best friends, Bella! Kailey is a photographer, so we spent time capturing some creative content for me, she took new headshots for Bella and I, and we got to do a really fun and gorgeous shoot! Then we just went to dinner, paraded around a Target, and lived like we were just a couple of college girls. It truly was a much needed escape from every day life!

I also got my vaccine this month! Yahoo! I got the single dose shot which rocked, and I only had a headache, body aches, and a low-grade fever for 24 hours. I feel really grateful to be vaccinated and I’m grateful that my immediate family members were also all able to get vaccinated. A year later, here we are!

And the fun isn’t over! Remember about a year ago when I wrote my post “The Show Must Go On” about not being able to perform in my senior showcase in New York last spring? Well IT’S HAPPENING! Just in a different way! This past weekend, my friends and I all gathered on campus again, got tested and all, and were able to film the showcase to be sent a year later! I’m going to write more about this experience in a post next month, but feel free to read last year’s post to get caught up on the saga!

Goals

No lie, I fell off the wagon in terms of my goals this month- IT HAPPENS! Unfortunately, I got sick right in the middle of the month for the first time in over a year and it really knocked me on my butt. I spent a lot of time just trying to keep myself healthy so I could get well fast because of all I had going on! A handful of my goals included singing more, keeping up with my Dance From Home Classes, staying off my phone…and honestly, I didn’t do so well with all of that.

At the start of the month, I had to miss 2 classes of DFH a week because I was teaching dance classes of my own- no biggie. Then I got sick which didn’t really allow me to sing or get my sick butt in class. I spent a period of a few days feeling down about it, but I was actually really proud of how I took care of myself when I wasn’t feeling well.

In college, my life and schedule were always go, go, go, and sometimes I had to sacrifice proper rest to get assignments done, get into rehearsals, or I just didn’t rest well because I felt like I was an indestructible college student. But this time around, I really took the time to baby myself. I went to work, came home, and RESTED. I took a whole day off later that week to get myself better, got an antibiotic, and rested every second I possibly could. It was a really nice change of pace. There was no way I could’ve predicted getting sick or could have predicted I wouldn’t get to be in classes as much this month, but it’s called rolling with the punches, people!

Blog Goals

Looking at my blog goals for this monthly review, I am pleased to say that grow is slow and steady! I set 5 goals for myself for this month and was able to accomplish 4 of them! I’ve been setting what I think are rather attainable goals for my online presence and the blog every month and so far, I’ve met most of them each month! My follower count on here is growing, my follower count on Instagram is growing, I’m in contact with and reaching out to more brands, and I’m ahead of the game in my planning. It feels great to say that. I also upgraded my blog plan this month! I was waiting until I reached my 1 year mark in May, but there was a sale on plans and I had to take advantage of it while I could!

With my upgrade, I have more tools for things like SEO and I’m able to add more plugins that will help me make the site the best that it can be! I appreciate every single one of you who are on this journey with me! My 50th post is coming up next month and we are almost at the 1 year mark, so stay tuned for lots of amazing and exciting things!

My March Read

Sometimes, I have a really hard time working through books, and this month I DEF spent way more time on my phone than finishing up my book…womp womp. BUT! It’s so inspirational, informative, and heart warming- the perfect read for anyone who may need a little added boost in their personal and professional lives! I highly recommend checking it out!

Happy Monday!

I’m back with the Beyond the Footlights Passion Piece Feature for March! This month I’m so thrilled to feature the incredible woman behind Plan With Laur, Lauren Ladouceur! I first came across Lauren’s profile a few months ago in a search of my own for individuals on Instagram that were part of the planning community. As you all know here, I’m obsessed with all things planning, stationary, planners, etc. While I have talked about planning on my own here on the blog as well as social media, I hadn’t really sought out other people/communities in that niche. When I found Lauren and Plan With Laur I immediately felt like I had found a little community I could be part of!

I recently attended Lauren’s Recommit to Your Goals workshop using her bundle and it was just what I needed at this point in the year. So often we set goals for ourselves at the start of the year, and we don’t stick to them- for many different and individual reasons. Lauren’s bundle and workshop helped me remember the WHY behind my big goals, establish attainable steps towards reaching my goal, and reframe my thinking as I decided to press on!

Here is a bit about Lauren in her own words:

“I’m the daughter of two military parents, so planning is rooted in my DNA: The frequent  moves and trips of my childhood gave me great appreciation to detail and plans early on. These  days, I work my 9 to 5 job and share my love for planning and goal-setting on the side. Though I  haven’t always had a planner, I’ve always been planning. I thrive in structured environments that  I can make sense of. 

Helping others is foundational for me. I want to make people feel heard and loved. With  planning, everyone has resources at their disposal but not everyone knows how to use them. Your  planner can be a window into your life, and I try to help you find a frame through which you  enjoy looking inside.”

Who are you, where are you from, and where are you spending your time these days? 

My name is Lauren but the planning community knows me as Plan With Laur. I’m your go-to gal  for all things planners, productivity, and how to use the resources at your disposal to plan today  for a better tomorrow. Where I’m from is difficult to answer because both of my parents were in  the military. I attended undergrad in the South but I call Boston home…for now!

What are you currently doing for work, if anything?

I’m a corporate talent professional in my day job. Most of my professional background is in  event marketing, however, which is why I think planning is something I naturally gravitate  towards in my personal life.

Tell me a little about your journey towards developing Plan with Laur and how it has  brought you to where you are today?

My story with Plan With Laur starts by finding the planner community. When I tell people  there’s a community of planners, they typically give me a blank stare. But when I moved to  Boston I didn’t know anyone and didn’t have a community. I bought a planner literally to make  plans to go places and meet new people. That probably sounds like the most Type A thing ever,  but planning gives me a sense of purpose and direction.

While waiting for my planner to arrive I found a YouTube community and Facebook groups of  like-minded people. Everyone in the community was talking so in depth about these complicated  planning strategies and very niche products. There was a huge learning curve. There wasn’t a “if  you’re new to planning start here” content creator, so I decided to contribute by teaching people  how to plan. 

I believe in simple, realistic, and functional planning. Sticker kits and washi tape is part of that,  but I talk about the plans themselves. At the heart of my community is to help people feel seen and heard. We all make plans and have aspirational goals around planning or productivity,  whether it’s for work or our personal life.

If you can, list for me your top 5 passions- no matter what they are!

In no particular order: Disney. running, Broadway, helping others and memory keeping.

Does the work you are currently doing fall into the same category as any of those passions?

I truly believe that I’m on this earth to help others. I seek this out in both my jobs, as a talent  professional and as a content creator. Memory keeping is a subset of planning, so I get to work  on memory keeping and share it with my community. I keep my Disney, Broadway, and running  passions apart from my work because I preach balance. 

What has inspired most you in a time where we are seeing so much change in the world?

As a Black person in the US, this year was emotionally exhausting. Racism and ignorance and  prejudice didn’t start in 2020 obviously, but there’s been a sea change of public opinion. I think  people are becoming more mindful of the privilege they carry. We still have a long way to go, but  we’re taking collective steps that are so important for progress.

What are some things you like to do in your down time to nurture your passions, so they can stay just as alive, consistent, and active as your work?

This is a good opportunity to talk about passion-adjacent activities. These are things that relate to  your passions. When I think of a painter, I typically imagine them nurturing their passion by  creating art. But there’s a whole host of passion-adjacent things they could be doing– volunteering their talents to teach someone else, watching YouTube, reading about new  techniques. This holistic approach means I’m doing something different each day! For me, this  might look like creating Broadway musical playlists for my next run, or training for my next  marathon at Disney.

What are your top 3 goals in your life/work?

My top goal is to create a community with Plan With Laur that teaches people how to plan better,  set and achieve their goals, reclaim their time and live a life they love. After that, I want to  cultivate a strong and resilient body and mind. And I always want to prioritize quality time with  the people I love most.

What does your self-care routine look like?

Sipping hot tea, memory keeping and watching the Bachelor or Bachelorette.

What advice do you have for anyone struggling to make the time for their passions in their  life?

Small is your best friend. Small goals, small blocks of time, and small action items give you  momentum to chip away at the larger goal; in this case, making time for your passion. It’s a  constant battle against the many distractions the world throws at us. But you can always make 5 minutes a day.

What are you hopeful for as we press on in 2021? What prospects excite you, scare you, and  make your heart flutter with anticipation? 

I can’t wait to travel again. When it’s safe to do so, you’ll catch me on a plane near you!

Hello my friends!

I can’t believe I’m already saying this, but we are halfway through March! I thought February went quickly, but this month is flying by! March has kind of a lot happening: International Women’s Day, Women’s History Month, the start of daylight savings time, the first day of spring, aaaaaand St. Patrick’s Day!

I’ll be the first to say there is not an Irish bone in this little Italian girl’s body, so I never really felt connected to the spirit of St. Patty’s Day (but it WAS a great excuse to look cute and go out with friends, you know, when going out was a thing). Does anyone else feel funny about the prospect of wearing a shirt that says “Kiss me, I’m Irish” if you’re not…actually Irish? Just me?

Whether you celebrate your Irish roots on St. Patrick’s Day, choose to embrace the traditions of the holiday, or don’t really celebrate it, there is one thing associated with the holiday that I think we can all embrace: LUCK!

Since last March, I think many of us can identify with the fact that it’s been hard experience moments of luck. Obviously, those with good health, those who have made it through the last year, and have made it to March 2021 are all lucky in many, many ways. But I’m sure many people have also felt like a cloud of bad luck has washed over them in terms of work, personal feats, and other varying aspects of life. I encourage you to take a moment and a.) write down all the reasons you are currently lucky and b.) take some time to think back and reflect on some of your luckiest moments! I guarantee that you will find you are lucky and have been lucky in more ways than you could’ve guessed!

In the same spirit, here are 13 of my luckiest moments with some lucky charms of mine thrown in the mix! These luck moments span my entire 23 years- some of them from my childhood were just too good not to include! I hope you find them as enjoyable as I do!

  1. So, my lucky number is 3. Why might you ask? Well, some of the details are a little bit blurry, but I decided this is the 2nd grade. I loved second grade, I had an amazing teacher, and she made the 2nd grade experience very enjoyable. I remember coming in on this day and I want to say maybe it was a birthday of a classmate or something? I don’t remember the first event, but maybe we got to have a treat to celebrate someone or something like that. Then, I for some reason received and Alice in Wonderland coloring book from my teacher. Cool! AND THEN, I don’t recall why, but I also got to pick a prize from the classroom prize chest. I remember feeling like it was my lucky day, getting to get 3 treats in one day! From that moment on, my favorite number has been 3!
  2. Getting to meet the Jonas Brothers when I was 10 years old was another lucky moment of mine! Funny story- we have always had a radio in our bathroom. One night, I was in said bathroom and some channel was on and they were giving away tickets to their concert and meet and greet passes. I was in there listening as they chose the winner; it was this guy Bob and he was so excited because his daughter was going to be so excited and he was talking about how the dog was barking in the background. Now, these are all very general details BUT for some reason I was like “Hm. My godmother’s husband’s name is Bob. They have a dog. And he’d be talking about my cousin because she loved the Jonas Brothers…” Really it was a long shot it was them. But sure enough, that weekend we went to a family gathering and my godmother shared with me it had been Bob who won the passes and they wanted to take me as their fourth person! Another stroke of luck!
  3. I started performing in community theatre when I was about 8 and the adults around me figured out pretty quickly that this was something I was proving to be really good at and loved doing. The first “big” role I had when I was younger was Susan in Miracle on 34th Street. It was my first taste of what it was going to be life to dedicate part of my life to this craft, even if I didn’t recognize it fully at the time. In Northeast PA there are these awards called the NEPTA’s that recognize and honor the community theatres of the area- and in the Northeast PA community theatre community…it’s kinda a big deal. To make a long story short, the year I did Miracle on 34th Street I was nominated for an award for my performance and I won! It might not have been luck so much as I earned it, but I think of it as a stroke of luck because it acted as validation from a very young age that this was something I was good at and could really work at! I might not be pursuing the career I am now if it hadn’t been for that lucky moment!
  4. Going off of that, the theatre where I often performed had a little smoke shop next to it that had gas station-like snacks and things, and it became a lucky charm of mine to always go over and get Airheads to eat before performances! I have no idea why, and I don’t know what made it lucky, but there was a period of time where I wouldn’t do a show without them!
  5. I felt really lucky being able to travel to Rome and Florence with classmates my sophomore year of college! Looking back, I feel even MORE lucky, because it was meant to be a biannual trip for students, but that never panned out. For whatever reason, the theatre department made it happen while I happened to be in school and I think that was a stroke of luck- especially now that travel isn’t as simple anymore.
  6. Being able to perform with the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival during my summer’s in college always made me feel very lucky, but my sophomore year made me feel super lucky in particular. I knew I had been cast in the ensemble for the show, but a little while after finding that out, the director (one of my professors at the time) had a few people also audition to cover one of the supporting roles, as the girl they had cast would have to miss 2 performances. Low and behold, I landed the part and got to go on for my first professional supporting role as a rising junior in college! It was one of the most exciting and joyous days of my career thus far!
  7. Being able to perform as a member of the 24 Hour Plays 2020 Cohort…in the middle of a global pandemic! Being able to get professional experience from the comfort of my own home, right out of school was really rewarding and I felt extremely lucky to be part of such an incredibly talented bunch!
  8. This is really random and also didn’t really materialize BUT around this time last year I actually one one of those little giveaways on Instagram! You know, the ones you always enter, and you never win? Yeah, well I won one! It was some little jewelry brand based out of Canada and it happened right before the shutdown. They let me know they’d be waiting to send my package because they weren’t going to the post office, which obviously wasn’t a problem, but then they just….never sent the package LOL I didn’t really care, plus we were in a freaking pandemic so I didn’t press it. But man, the one time I win…
  9. Landing my marketing assistant job was a lucky break! I work on the side as a project-based marketing assistant for a blogger, and I really applied for the job on a whim. I had started following her last year when I first started blogging, and I attended one of her live workshops to just learn more about this whole world and now I work for her! I didn’t think I would get it because of my lack of experience, but it just goes to show that being yourself and your ability to be teachable are extremely important!
  10. Another little good luck thing/superstition that I had in college was to wear the same jewelry to every audition in a year. Weird, I know. Whatever necklace/rings/bracelets/earrings I would wear to the first audition of the season would be what I had to wear to all of my other auditions for the rest of the year. I felt like they had some kind of lucky powers (especially if auditions went well and I landed the parts). For a period of time freshman year, I would also wear the same blue dress. My professors probably got so sick of seeing me in that dress. Fortunately, I grew out of that dress (thanks freshman 15) and I became a normal person with multiple outfits for different purposes.
  11. Obviously, the pandemic brought a lot of sadness and loss into everyone’s lives in different and individual ways. With that being said, looking back a year later, I believe I was very lucky to be in the position I was in. I had a family and a home to come back to, we had enough supplies to last us, no one in my family got really sick with Covid, and I was able to reap the benefits of unemployment and actually get some money into my savings. It all could have been much, MUCH worse, and for that I feel very lucky.
  12. Getting on a list for my vaccine! Because of my job, I was able to get one a vaccine list, and I should be able to receive my shot when the next batch of doses is available to employees! And I feel very lucky that many of my loved ones were able to get vaccinated!
  13. Finally, I feel extremely lucky for having the courage to follow my heart, start this blog, and for all of the amazing things that are coming out of it! I am finally starting to feel like I have a community both on this page and on my Instagram, and I’m seeing slow and steady growth! I feel very lucky to have been in my humanities class the day that my teacher asked us “what is one thing you would do if it wasn’t for your fear of failure?” I told my whole class that I would want to start a blog but was afraid no one would follow along or care about what I had to say. I’m very lucky to say now that I’m glad I didn’t let fear stand in my way.

Happy Monday, my friends!

I hope your March is off to a wonderful start! I love the spring but it dooooes come with one tiny little downfall…daylight savings. Losing that hour of sleep? Yikes. I don’t know if anyone else experiences this, but some years losing that hour absolutely rocks my world and other years I feel completely fine! I’ve felt better in my adult years, so maybe it was a thing of the past? Who knows, I’ll report back on that one LOL

If you are not like me and losing an hour during daylight savings time IS a major slap in the face to your routine and schedule, you might be wondering how you can prevent that from happening this year or even just lessen the blow a bit. Based on my own experiences and a little bit of research, here are some helpful hints for surviving the monster that is daylight savings time!

Don’t Change Your Routine

Even though we are about to experience a little shake up in our routines, it’s just a blip on the radar! You don’t need to let it alter your whole routine! In fact, I think maintaining your typical routine is essential in getting through this time. Are you an early riser? Don’t compromise your schedule by pushing back your daily start time. Don’t push back or put off the workout, try to keep your days going just like any other. Your body won’t notice such a sudden change if you just keep your routine going as usual!

If You Don’t Have a Routine…Get One!

On the flip side, don’t have a real routine? Get one! Particularly a morning routine. Establish a daily start time for yourself and stick to it! From there, planning out how you start your day to set yourself up for success is totally up to you! Try your best to establish the basis of your routine- what you do first, second, third, and so on. Maybe you get up, make the bed, complete your gratitude practice, chug a glass of water, do a yoga flow, shower/brush teeth/skincare, then get dressed, do makeup, and get to work! That’s just an example of how to set yourself up for greatness with your routine right off the bat. Set up your routine in a way that works for you and then stick to it!

Go to Bed Earlier & Start Earlier

Listen. I love sleep and I SO appreciate the days that I’m able to sleep in. But during the switch up of daylight savings time, I encourage you to get an early start! If you’re going to go to bed earlier, adjust the time you’re waking up accordingly as well. If your body is telling you to get up, get up! And going off of this note…

Listen to Your Body

Again, if you’re body clock is telling you it’s time to go, get goin’! But, at the same time, if your body is telling you to slow down, slow down. If your body is craving an extra hour of sleep and you can afford it, then absolutely take that. If you’re craving a little afternoon cat nap, do it up! While maintaining your routine IS important during this transition, it’s much more important to listen to what your body is telling you. Don’t run yourself down if you can help it!

Take in the Sun!

Yes, daylight savings time is about to take away an hour of our beauty sleep, but what we are about to lose in sleep we are going to gain back in SUNSHINE! WOOHOO! Very few things make me happier than sunnier, longer days. Going outside, or even just finding a sweet little pocket of sun in your home is going to make you forget about that lost hour of sleep so freaking fast! There’s nothing better than a little Vitamin D to brighten your spirit and warm your soul. And, of course, if you’re going to be out in the sun make sure your skincare routine involves sunscreen and make sure to stay hydrated!

Try to Stay Off Electronics Before Bed

Limiting your electronic screen time before bed is always a good thing, but it will do you even better during the daylight savings transition. This is something I’ve been generally trying to implement into my nightly routine to ensure better rest for myself. While it seems like a no brainer, I’ve truthfully found limiting my screen time at night to be a struggle! More of a struggle of willpower, really, so if you’ve got stronger willpower than me chances are good you’ll be just fine! In the settings on my phone, I’ve set time limits on my social media apps; they lock at 11pm. The tricky part is, you always have the option to ignore the limit…which I’m guilty of doing. Aside from that, I turn my phone on do not disturb around 10pm. Staying off those screens before bed has been proven to improve your quality of sleep which will be SUPER important for you during this transition!

Develop a Wind-Down Routine

Once you’ve got your phone silenced and your limits set, you’re going to want to develop a wind-down routine for yourself to help get ready for bed. For me, my wind down routine usually starts with showering, doing my evening skincare routine, brushing my teeth, getting into my warm pajamas and getting into bed. Then, I’ll fill in my daily gratitude journal, and sometimes I’ll write in my regular journal as well. One of the monthly goals I usually set for myself is to read 1-2 books, and the last thing in my wind down routine is to at least read a chapter or two of whatever book I’m reading! I’ve found that reading before bed relaxes me just enough to get me ready for a good night’s sleep. Include anything in your wind-down routine that will get you feeling the same way!


Hopefully this little handful of tips will help you survive Daylight Savings Time and come out on the other side with your routine still intact! Mother Nature is about to pull us out of the winter blues slump and launch us forward into a beautiful new season of spring! Soak up the sun and enjoy a little extra time in your day- make the most of it however you can!

To me, spring seems to mark a fresh start more than the New Year does. I mean, think about it: we are in winter from December-March, so January and February can sometimes just feel like an extension of the previous year (this year ESPECIALLY). Spring Clean Tip #1: Find Some New Spring Inspo

Back in January I wrote about How to Create Your 2021 Vision Board, but who knows, your visions may have changed by now! You might’ve already accomplished some of the goals you had set out to accomplish, or maybe you’ve completely changed your perspective and have gone back to the drawing board. Both are great! Either way, you may need to look for some new inspiration as the spring season starts! Finding new quotes of graphics that align with where you are at this season could be a great start. Or maybe you just want to fill your life with all things spring! If you work from home, or you aren’t able to get out into nature as much as you wish you could, maybe you plaster your screens and the area around you with new spring photos/decor! Spring Clean Tip #2: Refresh Your Spring Goals and Approach

Start a fresh new set of goals for the spring season! As you might already know, I like to set monthly goals for myself, so maybe you just start with a fresh, new set of goals for March! Or maybe you compile a new set of spring goals just to take you until the start of summer- a more seasonal way of goal planning! If you feel comfortable and confident in the goals you’ve already established for yourself, maybe use th spring season to refresh the steps you’re taking in order to help you achieve your goals! Perhaps some are working, and others are not, which may be holding you back!

Spring Clean Tip #3: Examine Your Relationships/Friendships

Now that the excitement of a new year and new goals may have settled down a little bit, use this spring season to look at how your relationships are serving you and how you are serving them. This is a great time to look at your relationships, what is working, and what isn’t working from both parties. If you and your significant other, a member of your family, or a close friend have maybe been a little off and communication hasn’t been great- now is a great time to reassess where you’re at. Having an open dialogue about what you both need/do not need or want is extremely important. Are there ways you know you can do better for your people? Tell them. Are there things you need from others that you aren’t receiving? Tell them. The only thing that won’t help is keeping it all in another season longer! And ultimately, if there are people in your life you feel you need to let go of, this is the perfect time for a fresh start.

Spring Clean Tip #4: ‘Clean Up’ Your Habits

Use this new spring season to spruce up the habits in your life! Want to be more active? Cut back on junk food? Drink more water? Get to bed earlier and wake up earlier? Want to start journaling or reading more? Now is the perfect time! Take stock of what comprises your routines and adjust accordingly!

Spring Clean Tip #5: Social Media Detox/Revamp

If a social media ~cleanse~ of sorts is something you need to clear your headspace as you enter the spring, DO IT UP! Even if you don’t want to give up all platforms entirely, you can set time limits on your apps or decide to seriously limit the time you spend on your phone each day! You could also use this time to de-clutter your social media by unfollowing accounts you don’t engage with anymore. Take a scroll through who you follow and have no mercy! If you’re feeling like you need to mute someone, DO IT! There is absolutely no shame in it, and no one will know but you. If it will save your sanity when you do spend time online, I encourage it! I think this is one of the easiest ways to ‘spring clean’ your mind!

If you’re on the opposite end of the spectrum and you’re looking to totally revamp or rebrand your social media platforms in the new spring season, this would be a great time to do that as well! Everything else is the world is blossoming into what it’s meant to be, why shouldn’t you?!

Spring Clean Tip #6: De-Clutter Your Space

This spring, if it doesn’t bring you ultimate joy, TOSS IT. Go through it all: the boxes of memorabilia everywhere, the top shelves of your closet, clothes, shoes, books, papers, files on your computer, makeup, bathroom cabinets, etc. Go through your winter wardrobe, assess what you didn’t wear, and take that stuff to Goodwill or sell it! Also spring clean the spaces where you spend most of your time…the car, your desk, or your home office! I did this when I came back home from living in my apartment and I’m SO ready to do it again! Carve out time in your day or throughout the week to just find quiet. Put your phone on silent, close the laptop, and find time to simply be with yourself. I know for me personally, I love quiet time. I definitely suffer from constant running thoughts, so when I’m able to quiet my mind, even just for a little while, it’s always a treasure. Read a book, meditate, journal, just sit and reflect on your day, do your gratitude practice- do anything that allows you to be more present!

This might not be all that different from finding quiet time, but find time in your life to practice self-care, whatever that means to you! Moving your body, enjoying a cup of coffee, taking a bath, paying your bills, planning out your week- anything! Just find time that is completely YOURS to be selfish with!

Spring Clean Tip #10: Try Something New

We’ve all gotten really good at adopting new skills since the pandemic made us all professional bakers, knitters, and crafters! But there is always room to try something new or find a new hobby! Or, if you’ve been wanting to do something you used to do a lot, but you’ve been putting off, now is the perfect time to get into it! We are extremely lucky to live in a world where we have the technology to take online classes and find so much information online. It’s all there at our fingertips, you just have to go for it!

Hellooooo!

The second month of 2021 is in the books! How are you doing, how are you feeling? Is 2021 just 2020 in a wig? Who’s to say. BUT if you’re reading this post, you’ve at least made it this far!

To be completely transparent, this month kicked my butt royally. Many tears were shed. Growing into “adulthood” is hard. Period. Particularly in the last few weeks, I’ve felt really out of sorts and like I’m just pulling myself through. I’m grateful to have such a strong support system though, which has made this tough month a lot more bearable.

I’m sure that many of you 20-something’s can totally relate to what I’m feeling- this impending sense of “now what do I do?” My theatre artist friends in particular. I’m happy to have any job(s) at all right now, but not being able to truly do what I love, or even something close, is difficult and disheartening. My feeling of frustration comes from a deep passion for the art that I love and not being willing to give up on that dream. Frustration and passions don’t seem like they fit together in the same sentence like that, but it’s hard when you want to pursue what you love, that industry is not really happening, and you’ve got bills and student loans hanging over your head (although, bless that extension). All this is to say: if you are reading this and this struggle continues to sting or hit you harder this month like it did me- I see you. I hear you. You are not alone, and we will find a way.

ANYWAY.

Let’s talk about February goals. Since I started writing monthly goals for myself back in June, I’ve noticed 2 things. 1.) my list of goals gets longer every month and 2.) even though my list has more goals on it, they are smaller, more tangible goals. I’m starting to get really specific about what I’d like to accomplish or implement in my life each month and the more specific I am, the more I can plan to take steps of action towards reaching those goals. I guess I’m also just learning more about myself, my routine, and what I can handle month to month! Going back and reviewing the goals I’ve set in past months has illuminated a lot about my growth process, and the goal setting/reviewing process is something I look forward to every month.

Some of my goals for February that I crushed were

  • Keep not looking at who views my Insta story
    • A little background. I will admit, I’m aware it’s REAL unhealthy, but I pay attention to my follower count and who is viewing my stories or not. I mostly pay attention to the follower count mainly because I am trying really hard to grow my brand online, gain exposure, and reach the goals I set on that front. But looking at who views my stories has been an additional struggle in my battle of “worrying what other people are doing or thinking.” I would find that I could still see when people I had muted (for my own mental sanity) had viewed my story, then I would look at their story if they had one…which defeated the purpose of having those people muted…a viscous cycle. SO, I’ve made it a goal to not view my story views and I’ve done really well!
  • Stay consistent with my Dance From Home Classes 🙂
  • Try not to spend on anything other than necessities (bill/birthdays)
    • Although I did spend a little on others things, I really did well with this this month
  • Read 1-2 books 🙂

Now, some things I didn’t quite crush…

  • Doing yoga 2-3x per week
    • I did do a decent amount of yoga this month, but not consistently like this every week
  • Actually stay off of my phone until my limits are up/once the limit starts 🙁
  • Less junk food, more water
    • Nailed the water, not so much the food…

Here were my blog goals!

  • Gain 5-10 new blog followers 🙂
  • Reach 1,600 followers on Instagram (or close to that) 🙂
  • Reach out to 1-2 brands 🙂
  • Work on Pinterest :/
  • Get ahead on plans and content :/
  • Post more consistently 🙂

Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

Y’all. This book. THIS BOOK! You must read it, it was so good- good doesn’t even describe how good it was. I thought it was exceptional. If you are a friend, daughter, mother, sister…you need to read it. I was so invested in the characters and their stories and I literally sobbed when I finished it. I can’t wait for all my friends to read it. Apparently, there is a sequel book and I NEED to get it pronto. Don’t walk, RUN to get this one.

Go Down Together: The Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde by Jeff Guinn

I’m reading this one currently! I am lowkey obsessed with the story of Bonnie and Clyde, and I’ve had this book on my shelf for many, many years but never made it all the way through. Once I finished Firefly Land, I picked this one up and decided to give it another shot! The first time I tried to read it I think I was too young to fully grasp the writing and the story, so it’s much more interesting to me now!

Firefly Lane: The Series

DO. NOT. WATCH. I feel very passionate about this. If you are going to watch, you need to read the book first. And I hate to tell you, if you do that, you will be extremely disappointed by the show. It is absolutely nothing like the book, it’s infuriating. I don’t know if anyone else gets this heated when tv/movies are entirely different from the book, but I do. I was so excited to watch the show right after finishing the book, since it just came out, and I was so disappointed. I watched the whole season because I was semi invested in this entirely new story they decided to tell, but I would 1,000% recommend just reading the book and leaving the show well enough alone.

Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel

I just started this! I can’t speak to the quality of the show too much just yet, but it’s freaky for sure!

Tik Tok

So…I’m late. LOL. Seriously, I’m light years behind. But I finally took the plunge and made a Tik Tok and my mom and I have really enjoyed sitting and watching videos together and cracking up. I only have 4 videos so far, 3 of which are singing, so we’ll see where this goes! I’m excited to create new content, just have to find the right spark! You can follow me @angelalarose1026

As we finish up February and head into March, I will be participating in Lent leading up to Easter in April! Every year I give something up, and usually it’s the same thing…C H I P S. I still gave up chips this year, but I also am giving up social media time before bed and always hitting ignore when my time limit comes up! I’m hoping this will help me sleep better and turn my mind off a bit more before heading to bed. Here’s hoping!

You made it through another month as we come up on the one-year mark of this “new” pandemic world. But what matters is that you made it through to see the other side of this month, and you will press on into a new one!

Hello, beauties!

A little change of pace today for our February Passion Piece Feature!!! Rather than featuring one individual this month, we’ve got a little group feature! Since self-love has been on my mind and in my heart this month, I took to social media and asked my friends and followers to share with me a little bit about self-love through their own eyes. I don’t think there is one way to define “self-love;” it isn’t a one-size-fits-all type of idea. We are all so unique and outstanding in our own beautiful ways, which means that how we each practice and recognize self-love is entirely individual.

You’re probably thinking “tell me something I don’t know, Angela, of course we are all different!” YES. RIGHT. SO. Why am I highlighting this? Because I think it’s important to note, for individuals of all ages, that the practice of self-care and what that idea means for you does not have to be static. Every day, every month, every year- your self-care practices and the way you view what self-love is is bound to change. And it should! That only means you are growing and learning more about yourself and the crazy, weird, complex thing that love (in all its forms) is.

I asked my little hive to share with me a time when they practiced a radical act of self-love, something they love about themselves, or what self-love means to them. These nine individuals are some of my closest friends, and I am so grateful to be able to feature them this week- even just a little bit! The variety in their responses has been so incredible and has illuminated new ways in which I can look for and cultivate self-love in my own life. I hope they do the same for you. To me, self-love is learning what you need and refusing to settle for anything less than that. It means cultivating a schedule and a routine that serves your needs on a daily basis and doing what you can to make the unpredictable moments a little less stressful. I’m still working on that. It means refusing to settle and always pushing yourself to try new things and being as open to change as you can be (REALLY still working on that). In my own life, spending serious time on my own and learning how to love myself in the last year and a half has been the ultimate act of self-love. Working on myself, for myself, and for the future individual(s) I will come to love is one of the greatest gifts I could ever give myself in the long run. Little random acts of self-love that I try to do often are manifesting, putting the phone down when I feel burnt out, eating foods I like because I can, and spending time in the quiet.

I hope that now, more than ever, you are finding new ways to practice self-love, and maybe dusting off ways in which you’ve practiced before if it’s been a while since you’ve taken time for YOU. You can start by writing down 3 things you love about yourself every day, or simply by listening to your body and honoring your own needs NO MATTER WHAT. You are so loved, and you deserve to feel that. What better way than to start from within?

Welcome to February! We’ve got Groundhog Day, Black History Month, President’s Day…and Valentine’s Day.

*insert either a sigh of disdain or laughter and joy*

Personally, I love THE IDEA of Valentine’s Day. I love all the pinks and reds, the hearts, the candy. I love it. But as a single lady for the last two years, I can’t help but feel that tiny twinge of sadness on the day as I scroll through social media. Are my single ladies with me?

Last year on the day, three of my girlfriends and I all found ourselves single for the first time in four years of college, and this by itself was reason to celebrate. We all got together at my apartment, made tacos and chocolate covered strawberries, sipped wine and watched bad TV and had the best single Valentine’s Day.

If, like me, you find yourself separated from your best gals this year due to distance, the pandemic, or just life, you may be feeling unsure of how to make this Valentine’s Day feel special just for YOU. Here are some ideas to help you make the day special and to help you practice self-love, because you DO deserve it!

Buy Yourself the Flowers and Chocolates

Flowers and Chocolates: Valentine’s Day staples. Maybe you love it. Maybe it makes you want to barf. I respect that. HOWEVER, there’s no reason to wait until you have a prescribed Valentine to treat yourself to sweet little gifts! If you do enjoy flowers, head out to the store and buy yourself the prettiest bouquet you can find! They’ll bring some life back into your space and make you smile. Flowers not your thing? Get the chocolates (Hell, even if the flowers are your thing, get the chocolates)! Don’t like flowers OR chocolates? Buy a pizza, some chips, ice cream, a bottle of wine- literally, treat yourself to whatever is going to make you happy!

Prepare Little Valentine’s Day Goodies for Your Friends or Co-Workers

Just because you might not be able to celebrate with your galentine’s in person doesn’t mean you can’t send a little bit of love their way on V-Day! One way to do that could be to put together a little bag of goodies to either mail to your friends or drop on their doorsteps! I’m not really all about Valentine’s Day, but I will say, Valentine’s Day themed gifts are really pretty. You could get cute little gift bags and fill them with candies, mini wine bottles, lips gloss/smackers, other makeup, candles, little earrings packs….the list goes on and on! All things you can find between your local dollar store, Target, Marshall’s, Walmart- nothing that breaks the bank! You could also give little goodie bags to your co-workers (you know, if you work in that sort of environment)!

Keep in mind, you don’t even have to send or drop off little gifts, you could also mail your friends a card/letter or drop one in your mailbox. Simply writing a little note letting your friends know you love them is truly gift enough!

This leads me to…

Throw a Galentine’s Day Party on Zoom

I know, we are SO sick of Zoom parties and gatherings. We are ready to go out and actually BE with our friends, drinking fun little drinks and eating tacos in public in our cute little outfits. Trust me. I get it. BUT we must make the most of the situation we are in! The next best thing: A Zoom Galentine’s Day party! Everyone can bust out the cocktail and meal of their choice OR perhaps you can all coordinate and make the same menu individually, then come together and catch up on Zoom. Everyone can wear their best comfy pink/red/white outfit, and maybe you even choose a cute movie to watch all together while one person screen shares! If you haven’t seen your gals in a while, getting together on Zoom will just be a great excuse to catch up if nothing else!


All the ideas mentioned above are perfect things to do this Valentine’s Day to find SOME way to celebrate, but now let’s take a step back and get a little more personal. So, what are some ways that you can show up for yourself and practice self-love in a much more personal way- this Valentine’s Day and beyond? Here are some sweet little suggestions for you to fill your Valentine’s Day with self-love!

Move Your Body

One of the greatest and easiest (generally speaking) acts of self-love that you can perform is moving your body! If you are mentally and physically able, I encourage you to find time to move your body in ways that make you feel strong, confident, and beautiful! You’ll feel lighter and happier when you’re done, for sure. Do whatever YOU feel best doing, no matter what that is! Even if that just means finding some time to stretch, taking care of yourself in this way is the ultimate act of self-care and self-love!

Cultivate Your Self-Love Affirmations

Affirmations can truly set the tone for your day, week, month, year- they are SO powerful! Grab your sticky notes and get ready to plaster your bathroom/bedroom mirror with your self-love affirmations! Take a moment and think about need out of a daily affirmation. Do you need love? Encouragement? Positivity? Strength? What is something that you are always looking to others to affirm for you? Surprise, my friends, you are more than capable of providing yourself with the affirmation that you need in any aspect of your life! We are through depending on others to affirm our worth, or anything else in our lives for that matter! Once you think of what you’d like to affirm for yourself most at this point in time, write it on a sticky note, stick it to a mirror that you’re going to look at every day, and never stop forgetting your worth.

Write Down What You Love About Yourself

If you have never taken the time to write down things you love about yourself, now is the perfect time to start! Truthfully, this isn’t something I’ve regularly done for myself- so I am right there with you if you want to try to make more of a conscious effort to incorporate this practice into your daily life! When I did the 14 Day Get Up and Dance Challenge with Dance From Home, there were days where we didn’t do any physical movement, we only had to write down three things we loved about ourselves that weren’t physical traits. I loved doing this, and it inspired me to continue the practice of writing down things I love about myself. If you can find three things, little things, that you love about yourself to write down each day- that’s amazing. If you can only find one thing to write down- that’s an amazing place to start. It might feel uncomfortable at first, but I promise, it will be so worth it in the end.

No matter how you’re spending Valentine’s Day this year, I think it’s about time that you start showing yourself more love than anyone could ever show you. That’s the first step, right? They (whoever ‘they’ is) say you can’t love someone else until you unconditionally love yourself, and I find this to be absolutely true. Love yourself, cherish yourself, and set the precedent for how you deserve to be loved and treated by others!

Now, have some pizza, have some win, have some chocolate, and don’t text your ex.
